Tom Crean’s first expedition to Antarctica in which he served under Captain Scott.

Crean’s time on the Discovery Expedition 1901-1904 for a short time saw him become a world record holder who reached furthest South record.

On November 11, 1902, 25-year-old Tom Crean, on his first Antarctic expedition aboard Discovery, and a number of the depot-laying team, under the command of Lieutenant Michael Barne, achieved the prized record, when they passed the 78°50’S latitude previously reached by Carsten Borchgrevink, on 16th February 1900.

It was, however, short-lived when, just over a month later, Scott, Shackleton and Wilson extended the record to 82°11’S.
