Explorers playing football on the Antarctic ice
Listen

Life in Antarctica wasn't only about hard work. When there was a break in their duties, the explorers liked to play football on the ice to have some fun and keep warm. The frozen ground made the ball bounce and skid in unusual ways, quite different to playing on grass.

Did you know? Games like football helped keep spirits high during the long, dark months of the Antarctic winter, when there was very little daylight.
Try It Yourself Can you bounce and roll a ball along the floor to hear how different it sounds compared to catching it? Now imagine playing on ice instead of grass!

Tom's Favourite Tackle

Tom Crean loved playing football on the ice with his crewmates. He had his very own way of stopping the other team from scoring a goal — if their striker looked like he was about to shoot, Tom would playfully wrestle him to the ground and sit right on top of him until the danger had passed!
