What Does a Primus Stove Sound Like in Antarctica?

The primus stove was one of the most important things Tom Crean and his crewmates carried with them across the ice. It burned a special fuel, making a loud hissing and roaring sound as it heated up. The stove was used to melt snow into drinking water and to cook warm meals inside the tent.

Did you know? A primus stove could boil water even in freezing temperatures! Explorers often had to warm it up with their hands first just to get it started.

The stove's steady roar became a familiar and comforting sound after long, cold days of travel — a sign that a hot meal was on its way!

Try It Yourself Can you make a hissing sound like a primus stove? Try saying "sssssss" softly, then a little louder, just like the stove heating up.
A Funny Story from the Ice

On Chips, Yes, But As A Drink, No Thank You!!

One night, while Tom and two others were camping out on the ice, one of Tom's friends put a pan of water on the primus stove to make a drink of cocoa. What he didn't realise was that he had put curry powder in the cups instead of cocoa, After stirring a couple of spoonfuls of sugar into Tom's cup he handed it to Tom who gulped the hot, spicy, sweet drink, down without knowing what he had drunk. It didn't matter to him though and he just shrugged his shoulders and never complained.
