Weddell seals were seals that Tom Crean often saw resting on the ice in Antarctica. They liked to lie very still and quiet for hours. But when a seal did make a sound, it was easy to hear — a mix of grunts, groans, and funny warbling noises that could travel a long way across the ice.

Did you know? Seals can also make sounds underwater, deep beneath the ice! These sounds are too low and quiet for us to hear without a special microphone.

Seal sounds surprised many explorers. Some said the calls sounded a bit like a dog barking — a funny, friendly sound to hear in such a quiet, icy place!
