Tom Crean, your Antarctic guide

On quiet evenings, we loved a good game of snooker! Press play below to hear the sound of the balls.

A game of snooker played by explorers in Antarctica
Listen

Snooker is a game played on a large table, using a long stick called a cue to hit balls into pockets around the edges. Even far from home in Antarctica, the explorers found ways to relax and have fun together, and snooker was one of their favourite evening games.

Did you know? The click of the balls tapping together and the soft thud as they drop into the pockets made snooker one of the most relaxing sounds to listen to after a long day of hard work.
Try It Yourself Can you make a clicking sound like snooker balls? Try tapping two coins or two small stones gently together to hear a similar click.

Did you know that Tom Crean, on his second expedition to Antarctica, played in and won a snooker competition? He was clearly good at all sorts of things — exploring, football, and even snooker!
