A Half-Sung Song No Longer: Bringing Tom Crean's Story Into the Classroom
For eleven years, I fought to get Tom Crean the recognition he deserved. When the RV Tom Crean was named in his honour in 2021, I thought that chapter of the mission was complete.
It wasn't. It was just the start of a different one.
Because recognition from a government is one thing. But a story only really survives if it gets handed on, generation to generation — and no one carries a story further than a child who has fallen in love with it.
I've spent years now making sure Tom Crean's story is never a half-sung song again. The biography. Tom The Mighty Explorer for younger readers. The Dictionary of Irish Biography entry, revised after the Royal Irish Academy examined the evidence I'd gathered. All of it has been about making sure the record is finally, properly right.
But none of that matters much if it never reaches the classroom — if the next generation never gets the chance to meet Tom for themselves.
So that's what I've spent this year building.

The free Hear Antarctica soundscapes are already live on this website, alongside a printable Junior Polar Explorer Certificate — but that certificate is earned, not given away. It's awarded specifically for completing all fifteen mission worksheets found in the bundle, because I wanted it to mean something when a child receives one, not be handed out for a few minutes spent listening.
