What Does a Blizzard Sound Like in Antarctica?

Tom Crean, your Antarctic guide

Blizzards could blow so strongly that we could barely see our own hands! Press play below to hear what one sounded like.

A blizzard blowing across the Antarctic ice
Listen

A blizzard is a strong, blowing snowstorm, and in Antarctica they could last for hours or even days. The wind howled and roared, whipping up so much snow that explorers sometimes couldn't see more than a few steps ahead of them.

Did you know? During a really bad blizzard, explorers would sometimes have to stay inside their tents for days at a time, waiting for the wind to calm down before they could travel safely again.
Try It Yourself Can you make the sound of a blizzard? Try blowing air gently through your lips to make a long, whooshing wind sound, getting louder and softer as if the wind is gusting.

Walking Through the Storm

Tom Crean walked through many blizzards during his time in Antarctica, often in extremely difficult conditions. After one especially brave journey to get help for an injured companion, Tom was awarded the Albert Medal — one of the highest honours for bravery a person could receive.
