What Do Waves Sound Like in Antarctica?

Tom Crean, your Antarctic guide

The sea could be rough, with waves crashing over our little boat! Press play below to hear what it sounded like.

Waves crashing near a small boat in Antarctica
Listen

The seas around Antarctica could be some of the roughest in the world. Huge waves crashed against small boats, sometimes lifting them right up before dropping them back down again. The sound of crashing waves and rushing water could be very loud, especially when travelling in a small open boat far from land.

Did you know? Waves in the Southern Ocean can be some of the biggest anywhere on Earth, because there's no land in the way to slow them down as they travel all the way around the world.
Try It Yourself Can you make the sound of a wave? Try saying "whoooosh" softly, then a little louder, like a wave rising up and then crashing back down.

Singing Through the Storm

During one especially dangerous voyage in a small boat called the James Caird, huge waves crashed over the sides and lifted the boat high into the air. The men on board were frightened by the rough seas — so Tom Crean began to sing to help keep everyone calm. His singing voice wasn't very good at all, but it helped take everyone's mind off the storm!
