What Does a Tent Flapping Sound Like in Antarctica?

Tom Crean, your Antarctic guide

On windy nights, our tent canvas would flap and snap all night long! Press play below to hear what it sounded like.

A tent flapping in the Antarctic wind
Listen

Antarctica's winds could be very strong, and when they blew hard, the canvas of the explorers' tents would flap loudly all night long. The sound could be sharp and snappy, almost like a flag flapping about on a very windy day.

Did you know? Expedition tents were specially designed to survive fierce winds, but the noise of the flapping canvas still made it hard for the explorers to sleep on some nights!

Even though the flapping could be noisy, the tent was an important shelter. It kept the explorers safe and a little warmer, sheltered from the freezing winds outside.

Try It Yourself Can you make a flapping sound? Try shaking a piece of paper or a scarf quickly through the air to hear a sound a little bit like a tent flapping in the wind.
