A dog sledge team in Antarctica
Listen

Dog sledges were used to carry supplies and travel long distances across the Antarctic ice. Teams of strong, hardy dogs pulled wooden sledges over the snow, and as they ran past you could hear the swish of the sledge runners along with the excited panting and barking of the dogs.

Did you know? Sledge dogs worked together as a team, with one clever lead dog often deciding which way to go and helping to guide all the others.
Try It Yourself Can you bark like a sledge dog? Try running on the spot and panting like a dog pulling a sledge across the snow!

The Great Antarctic Derby

On 15th June 1915, the explorers held their very own dog sledge race across the ice, nicknamed the "Antarctic Derby"! Five teams took part in the 700-yard race. Frank Wild, the expedition's second-in-command, was the favourite to win — and he did, with Tom Crean's own dog team crossing the line in an impressive third place.
