What Do Footprints in Snow Sound Like in Antarctica?

Tom Crean, your Antarctic guide

Even in deep snow, we could still hear the crunch of every single step! Press play below to hear what it sounded like.

Footprints in the Antarctic snow
Listen

Walking across Antarctica's snow made a crunching, squeaking sound with almost every step — especially in very cold, dry snow. The sound changes depending on the temperature and how packed down the snow is, from a soft crunch to a high, squeaky sound in the coldest conditions.

Did you know? In very cold weather, snow can squeak almost like a cartoon sound effect! This happens because tiny ice crystals rub together in a special way when it's cold enough.
Try It Yourself Can you make a crunching sound with your feet? Try stepping carefully on some crumpled paper or bubble wrap to hear a sound a little bit like walking on snow!

Leaving His Own Footprints

One of the most remarkable stories from Tom's time in Antarctica happened when he walked thirty-five miles alone across the ice to fetch help for two injured companions. His walk of 18 hours saved their lives as he left his own footprints in the snow. You can read the full story of Tom's lifesaving solo march.

Discover More about Tom

Did you know Tom sailed all the way to Antarctica three times? On his journeys he saw and heard even more amazing things than what you've just explored here. You can read all about his adventures in Tom the Mighty Explorer.
